A backload is freight that fills a vehicle already committed to travelling that way. We have delivered in Leeds, the unit is booked back south, and the trailer is empty. Somebody moving pallets in that direction saves real money taking the space, and we cover the cost of a leg we were running regardless. Neither side is doing the other a favour, which is why the arrangement lasts.
The trade is date flexibility for price. A dedicated load runs when you say. A backload runs when a vehicle is genuinely heading that way, which might be tomorrow or Thursday. If your freight has a hard deadline, book a dedicated run and pay for the certainty. If it has a week, a backload is the cheapest compliant way to move it.
What does not change is worth stating. Same vehicle, same driver, same insurance, same operator licence, same proof of delivery. The only thing you give up is control of the exact day.

Backloads and Return Journeys: common questions
How much cheaper is a backload?
It varies with route, volume and how much date flexibility you can give, so we price each one rather than publish a percentage. The saving is largest on long trunk corridors where empty running would otherwise cost most.
How much notice do you need?
The more the better, because notice is what lets us find the right return leg. Same day backloads occasionally work if a vehicle is already positioned, but planning a week ahead gets a better rate and a better chance of a match.
Is a backload less safe for my freight?
No. Same vehicle, driver, insurance and operator licence as a dedicated run. The journey was already happening, so you are buying capacity that would have travelled empty.
What if you cannot find a match in time?
We tell you before your window closes and quote a dedicated rate so you can decide. We will not sit on freight hoping a return leg appears.
